#WWI – A #trekking #weekend of #remembrance, to honour the life of those who fought on the Friulian #Alps, hills and planes

If you choose to join us on a “trekking weekend of remembrance”, we will guide you through some of the most important battlefields in Friuli, the north eastern corner on the border with Austria and Slovenia, where the battles where made harder by the impervious terrain on which they were fought.

You will walk on the ridge of the mountains to discover trenches, communication trenches, observation towers, tunnels, bunkers, artillery locations, machine guns and rifles; on the summit you will appreciate the incredible closeness between the two opposing lines of defence, situated only a few hundred meters from each other, in some cases only tens of meters.

Learn about the history of women who become heroines of history: the Carnic Bearers (Portatrici Carniche), who continually risked their lives, in order to guarantee the communications between trenches and front lines, sneaking in with food and ammunition for the fighters.

We have designed an itinerary which starts from the plains and gentle hills around Ragogna and ends the next day with a full day trekking experience on one of three open air battlefields in the mountainous “Carnia Zone“ on the border with Austria.

Forte_Monte_FestaThis area is so rich in “War locations” that we could not fit them all in in a short weekend. We have mentioned just a few, leaving to you the choice among those we have suggested. If you however have any other locations dear to your heart because maybe one of your ancestors fought in Friuli, feel welcome to give us the details and we will work out an itinerary based on your suggestions, and if needs be, extend your stay by one or more nights.

An historical expert of World War I will be with us at all times.
